About Us

Established in 1997, The Cheshire Horse is a family-run business located in Swanzey, New Hampshire, with a partner store in Saratoga Springs, New York. We are New England's source for horse, pet, and farm supplies.

We offer the best and largest selection possible backed up by knowledgeable staff and great customer service. Our retail locations stock everything needed to equip you, your horse, your pets, and your barn. We also offer a wide range of products for purchase on our website and our eBay store, but we always encourage you to take a trip to visit one of our retail stores, where we provide personalized customer service. It’s always worth the trip!

In 1997, The Cheshire Horse grew out of the Hamshaw family’s long-established business, Hamshaw Lumber in Keene, New Hampshire. The original modest 1,200-square-foot shop catered to the local equestrian community in Keene. By 2002, The Cheshire Horse outgrew its original location and moved into a 4,000-square-foot site also in Keene, which allowed for expanded inventory and growth. A year later in 2003, former employee Kristin Young partnered with the Hamshaw family to open The Cheshire Horse of Saratoga. This New York store offers the same inventory and service as the New Hampshire store, on a smaller scale and close to area attractions such at the Saratoga Racetrack (the oldest organized sporting venue of any kind in the United States) and Skidmore College (boasting one of the nation's top intercollegiate riding programs).

Always a close partner, we worked with Hamshaw Lumber to build our current store. In 2007, we opened this 23,000-square-foot retail store in Swanzey, New Hampshire. This store is set on five acres, and it is made up of 13,000 square feet of showroom and office space, as well as 10,000 square feet of warehouse space which includes a drive-through for our customers’ convenience. The store also contains a lounge area with a large-screen television, couches, coffee, and snacks. In addition to our already expansive inventory, The Cheshire Horse is an authorized dealer of Featherlite, Bravo, and Cornpro trailers. Feed and supply delivery is offered, and services such as blanket cleaning, fence installation, saddle-fitting, saddle trials, engraving, and equipment rentals are available at the store. It’s truly a one-stop shopping experience!

Our expansive inventory and continued focus on personalized customer service and convenience brings people from throughout the Northeast to see all that we have to offer. Come visit us today, and let us show you our commitment to help you find exactly what you need!
