If you have been around horses for any length of time, you quickly learn to recognize the pungent smell and the black discharge that characterizes thrush. This bacterial infection of the hoof is most commonly found in the frog. Thriving in wet conditions, thrush is particularly common in the spring. If not treated, thrush can cause lameness or even permanent damage to your horse’s hoof.

Fortunately, thrush is relatively easy to treat. At The Cheshire Horse, we carry an extensive selection of thrush treatments that are sure to get your horse’s hooves back to tip-top condition in no time at all. Mustad Thrush Buster and Thrush RID by Durvet are perpetual customer favorites. These bright purple liquids allow you to see where you have applied the treatment easily. They also let you know when it is time to re-apply -- when the color fades, so has the medication; it's time for another dose.

We also carry gel and powder treatments from trusted equestrian manufacturers, including Equiderma, Zoetis, Sport Horse Essentials, Hawthorne, and more. Some gels come in a convenient syringe; they are ideal for applying underneath horseshoes and in deep cracks and crevices. The revolutionary powders adhere to your horse’s frog and hoof sole for long-lasting protection.

Thrush prevention is essential as well. In addition to picking out your horse’s hooves daily, consider a topical treatment. Products from Absorbine, Spurrs, SBS, and Leovet spray directly on the hoof to help control moisture levels; it also disinfects the frog to discourage bacterial growth. We also recommend these products for routine maintenance.

Our friendly sales staff has years of experience in the barn and around horses. They are always willing to discuss thrush treatment options with you to help keep your horse happy and healthy.

If your horse is contracting thrush frequently or has a case of thrush that does not improve with treatment, please contact your veterinarian or farrier. These horse health professionals will be able to assist you in determining the best course of action for your horse.
