Happ-E-Mare Review

Amy with her two Friesians

My 18-year-old Friesian mare, Foxy, normally has difficult heat cycles that begin in January and persist into the late fall, but this past year was entirely different. After a distinct change in behavior and obvious symptoms due to being in season, I chose to try the Happ-E-Mare supplement. This supplement exceeded my expectations and has helped Foxy tremendously.

When my Friesian gelding balked at being turned out with Foxy, his longtime companion, I realized something was going on this winter. As she blocked the gate and he stubbornly resisted entering the paddock, I was quickly frustrated with both of them. As I released the gelding there was a brief scuffle and squealing, but then, they went to their respective hay piles.

I have a good view of the paddocks from my kitchen sink, and, as I was rinsing my coffee pot, I glanced outside expecting to see horses peacefully eating hay. Instead, I saw my mare repeatedly backing up into my poor gelding’s chest. I decided to go out and separate them, since my mare was obviously in season and my gelding wanted nothing to do with her.

In an effort to alleviate the problem, I moved the mare to an adjoining paddock with her ration of hay. Now, she was trotting anxiously up and down the fence line screaming for her friend. She would not eat or rest for some time that day. The final straw was later that evening when I was trying to bring her into the barn. My barn helper was a distance behind me and Foxy stopped because the gelding (her newfound love interest) was behind her. Typically, Foxy has perfect ground manners, so I was taken back by her ignoring my commands.

This mare is no stranger to having strong seasons, but it had never affected her behavior like this before. Because of her change in behavior, we had the vet out to assess her and found no problematic results. In the past, she seemed to be in heat frequently, but now she was also stressed, spooky, and could not settle down.

For the next few days, as this behavior continued. I decided to look for a supplement to help Foxy with the seasonal discomfort and behavior issues she was showing. There were several choices but I selected Happ-E-Mare because I liked the ingredient list and the fact that it was low in sugar and starches, non-GMO, and pesticide-free with added vitamins and minerals as well as nine balancing herbs. The high-dose vitamin E also allowed me to discontinue the vitamin E supplement that she was already eating. It was also reasonably priced and came with a money-back guarantee.

Using Happ-E-Mare was easy. For the first 14 days, I gave her one scoop morning and night with her grain. After that, I was able to transition to just one scoop a day! I was worried about the palatability of the supplement, but she ate it in her grain without issue.

As the second week of usage went by, I started noticing a calmer horse. When I looked out the window, I only saw horses peacefully eating hay. She was calmer on lead and did not overreact to horses being walked behind her. I turned her back out with my gelding after 15 days of supplement usage — he braced for impact, but she went straight to her hay pile. For me, this was a resounding success!

Happ-E-Mare is made by Equine Medical and Surgical Associates who have a veterinarian with over 30 years of experience on staff. They are very active in the horse health world and are easy to contact with questions or concerns. It is manufactured in the United States (Pennsylvania to be exact) along with a host of other quality supplements. While Happ-E Mare was predominantly developed for mares, it can also be used on anxious and nervous geldings and stallions.

Due to the effectiveness of the supplement and the positive change in Foxy’s demeanor, I plan to continue using Happ-E-Mare to ease my mare’s tough cycles.
