Many oral cattle medications are manufactured in the form of hard pills which are known as a solid bolus. Oral bolus administrations are popular among livestock owners since they are more economical and less invasive than intravenous, intramuscular, subcutaneous, and intramammary medications. In addition to medications, bolus is also a common form for vital bovine supplementation.

When administering bolus medications, a balling gun is loaded with the treatment bolus and put through the interdental space onto the back of the tongue. The lever in the balling gun or bolus gun is pressed which pushes bolus into the very back of the mouth, forcing the cow or steer to swallow it.

We carry high-quality and durable balling guns and bolus guns from Ideal Instruments.

All ruminant livestock can use bolus medications; this includes goat, sheep, and cattle breeds. We encourage you to speak with your veterinarian if you have any questions regarding bolus administration.
