Twitches are a way to restrain your horse for veterinary treatment, clipping, and other high-stress situations. When utilizing a twitch, pressure is applied to the end of the horse's nose, and this is said to release endorphins, which in turn creates a calm demeanor for your horse.

A chain twitch, such as the Intrepid Chain End Twitch, requires a handler to hold the horse and the twitch. The loop (either rope or chain) is placed around the horse’s upper lip and then the wooden handle is twisted until the loop is snug. The handler can slightly loosen or tighten the twitch by moving the handle.

Humane twitches, including the Jacks Humane Twitch, are another type of twitch. These can be used without the assistance of a handler, which makes them a popular option in case of emergency. The nutcracker-shaped twitch attaches to your horse’s nose and is then secured with a rope before clipping to your horse’s halter.

The use of a twitch should be limited to 15-20 minutes and should only be used under the guidance of an experienced equestrian.

Many equestrians use twitches in lieu of tranquilizers to keep their horses still and quiet during essential horse husbandry practices.
