The Cheshire Horse believes in the importance of wearing helmets when working with horses, and as such, we carry a wide variety of styles so there’s something for every equestrian. For young equestrians, we have children’s helmets in sizes and colors. For adults, we have riding helmets for English and Western disciplines - for schooling, showing, and even trail riding (or hacking). We even have a number of helmet accessories, including helmet bags and helmet cleaning supplies in order to help you protect your helmet for years to come.

Just as important as wearing a helmet is choosing a helmet that fits correctly. It should have a snug and even fit, and sit level on your head. Different brands and styles of helmets vary, and some will fit better than others. Primarily, the shape is important because some heads are more oval shaped while others are more round - and the same goes for helmets. The Cheshire Horse carries a variety of ASTM/SEI certified horseback riding helmets from trusted brands including Charles Owen, Troxel, Ovation, One K, Tipperary, and more - so you’re sure to find the fit that is best for you. We encourage you to visit our blog, The Ultimate Guide to Purchasing an Equestrian Helmet, to learn more about the helmet options available and how to choose the appropriate helmet for your needs.

In recent years, some helmet manufacturers, such as Trauma Void and Charles Owen, have begun to utilize the same technology that is often seen in bicycle and snowboarding helmets: the Multi-Directional Impact Protection System (MIPS). These helmets include an integrated liner that moves with the rider’s head to minimize the force and impact of a fall. Learn more by reading, An Introduction to MIPS Equestrian Helmet Technology

Generally speaking, your helmet should be replaced at least every five years from the date of purchase - or sooner than that if it’s been involved in a serious fall or other hard blow, or if it’s been exposed to the elements beyond typical use. Some helmet manufacturers have replacement programs to help you purchase a new helmet if your helmet has been involved in an accident. To prolong the life of your helmet, store it in an area that maintains a moderate temperature, and avoid storage in extreme temperatures such as in a hot car.
