In recent years, some helmet manufacturers, such as Trauma Void and Charles Owen, have begun to utilize the same technology that is often seen in bicycle and snowboarding helmets: the Multi-Directional Impact Protection System (MIPS). Generally speaking, your helmet should be replaced at least every five years from the date of purchase - or sooner than that if it’s been involved in a serious fall or other hard blow, or if it’s been exposed to the elements beyond typical use. Some helmet manufacturers have replacement programs to help you purchase a new helmet if your helmet has been involved in an accident. To prolong the life of your helmet, store it in an area that maintains a moderate temperature, and avoid storage in extreme temperatures such as in a hot car.
