Bits

With so many bits available today, it can be challenging to choose the best bit for your horse. There isn’t a single perfect bit for every horse, and you may find that different bits provide better communication and comfort based on where your horse is in their training, the discipline you’re riding, or even the environment you’re in. Learn more about the different cheek types, mouthpieces, and materials on our blog in order to find the right combination for you.

Proper fit is crucial for your horse’s bit. In order to determine the best size, you can stretch a piece of heavy string across the inside of your horse’s mouth - marking with your fingers where it meets the corners of your horse’s mouth, and then measure that distance in inches with a ruler. Dee-rings and eggbutts should rest comfortably against the outside of your horse’s lips, and loose-ring bits should have about one-eighth inch more room in order to prevent pinching. As for the width of a bit mouthpiece, it is measured in millimeters and refers to the circumference of the widest part of the mouthpiece, which is usually next to the bit cheek. Your veterinarian or dentist can tell you if your horse has an unusually thick tongue or low palate that would restrict your width and port height choices.
