Loose Ring Bits

Unlike their eggbutt and dee-ring counterparts, the cheek pieces of loose ring snaffles rotate freely through the holes in the mouthpiece. This means that the mouthpiece does not lay steady in your horse’s mouth, but instead requires your horse to carry it. For horses that tend to lean on or brace against the bit, this makes loose ring snaffles a fantastic option.

We carry a wide assortment of loose ring snaffles with a variety of mouthpieces from trusted equine manufacturers like Herm Sprenger, Korsteel, Shires, Smith Worthington, Stubben, and Weaver Leather. We even have a complete selection of Myler Level One and Myler Level Two Loose Ring Snaffles.

The Flex Control Loose Ring Snaffle Bit from Herm Sprenger is made of Aurigan metal, which has a sweet taste to horse. This unique mouthpiece encourages salivation and makes your horse softer in the mouth.

Loose ring snaffles are popular among dressage riders, since they encourage full body suppleness while discouraging your horse from leaning against the bit. Many of the snaffles that we carry are legal in dressage competition. Refer to the United States Dressage Federation (USDF) or United States Eventing Association (USEA) rulebook for details and a complete listing of legal mouthpieces.

Depending on the size and shape of the bit, your horse may experience occasional pinching when the bit is activated. One way to combat this is to purchase a loose ring snaffle is a half inch larger than you would typically purchase. Overly sensitive horses may still be bothered by the cheekpiece, in these instances we suggest utilizing rubber bit guards to protect your horse’s lips.
